Project Overview

Experiential learning, or "learning through reflection of doing," has proven to be a highly successful method of education, especially in hands-on professions like beekeeping. For new beekeeping farmers, learning how to properly manipulate hive equipment and safely manage hives with minimal disruption to bees is essential. They also need to develop the ability to assess hive needs through sensory observations, such as touch and smell, which cannot easily be conveyed through lectures, online videos, or books. While many experienced beekeepers are eager to become mentors, they often face barriers, such as lacking suitable locations or enough hives for teaching purposes. Through this project, we built upon the Regional Great Plains Master Beekeeping (GPMB) Program (previous BRFD # 2018-70017-28546), achieving several key objectives: 1) We enhanced open apiaries and field training opportunities to promote GPMB level advancement; 2) We improved the GPMB website’s user interface and experience, making it easier for users to track their progress independently and ensuring long-term usability; 3) We developed hands-on training kits and demonstration aids that complemented existing lectures and online materials, enhancing practical field training and experiential learning; and 4) We continued to offer targeted training opportunities for underserved populations. The overall aim of this workforce training program was to expand practical skills and experiential learning for both beginning and experienced beekeepers. This was accomplished through the enhancement of external partnerships, such as local beekeeping groups, which fostered community-level engagement, support, and learning.
