Project Overview
Grow Appalachia's Climate Resilient Farming Project (CRFP) increased the viability and conservation impact of socially disadvantaged and limited resource (100% of participants) beginning farmers in Eastern Kentucky. The CRFP had three primary goals that were met across four educational, networking, and technical assistance objectives for beginning farmers The CRFP: 1) Increase the income and efficiencies, and conservation practices of beginning farmers; 2) Improve the Climate Resiliency of beginning farmers; and 3) Increase the peer networks and resource opportunities for beginning farmers. Grow Appalachia worked with 41 beginning farmers in 38 counties, and two urban areas throughout Kentucky, delivering an eight-month hybrid/ but mostly in-person learning series on a variety of Climate Resilient topics based on feedback from farmers. Grow Appalachia oversaw an internship program for 20 beginning farmers, and facilitated 8 Networking Field Day sessions for 104 beginning farmers to be exposed to a diverse group of successful farmers and farm models. The CRFP will also supported 397 beginning farmers' professional development by attending regional conferences and educational events. By the end of the project, 60 beginning farmers (Categories 1-3) will have increased their skills and knowledge of production, conservation practices, and business planning for their farms.
